French forces engaged were composed of a mix of both regular force and militia units along with Indian allies, numbers varying between sources again.<ref name="Macleod228"/><ref name="opposingforces"/> The militia were poorly armed with rifles and no [[bayonet]]s and the Indian allies were unfamiliar with European-style battle tactics. According to the Government of Canada website, using numbers provided by historian André Charbonneau, the French had 2,000 men of the [[French Army]], 600 Canadians drafted into the regular force units, and another 1,800 militiamen and Indian allies.
