Cox thrived at law school, ranking first in his class of 593 at the end of his first year.<ref>{{harvnb|Gormley|1997|pp=1:26–28}}; {{harvnb|Hilbink|2000|pp=9, 12–13}}.</ref> Cox's second year was taken up with work on the ''[[Harvard Law Review]]''. He also met his future wife Phyllis Ames. Cox proposed to her after only three or four meetings.
