According to the Book of Mormon, Moroni was the son of [[Mormon (prophet)|Mormon]],<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/bofm/morm/6.6?lang=eng|title=Mormon 6|website=churchofjesuschrist.org|access-date=September 19, 2018}}</ref> the prophet for whom the Book of Mormon is named. Moroni may have been named after [[Captain Moroni]], an earlier Book of Mormon figure.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/bofm/alma/48.11-17?lang=eng|title=Alma 48|website=churchofjesuschrist.org|access-date=September 19, 2018}}</ref> Before Mormon's death in battle, he passed the golden plates to Moroni.
