During the [[Hellenistic period|Hellenistic]] and [[Roman period|Roman]] periods, Aleppo was known as '''Beroea''' ([[Veria|Βέροια]] in [[Greek language|Greek]]), a name likely assigned by the [[Seleucid Empire|Seleucid]] rulers after the [[Macedonia (ancient kingdom)|Macedonian]] city of the same name.
