The [[Brotherhood of Saint Roch]] maintained basic hospitals and shelters for the sick and disabled in Vilnius from 1708 to 1799, although it is unknown if the brothers had any medical education. They hired [[paramedic]]s, doctors, [[surgeon]]s, and female [[nurse]]s for female patients. A significant number of patients had [[sexually transmitted diseases]] which other Catholic hospitals refused to treat.
