Given the importance of malaria, with some 220&nbsp;million people infected annually, many attempts have been made to interrupt its transmission. Various methods of [[malaria prophylaxis]] have been tried including the use of [[antimalarial drug]]s to kill off the parasites in the blood, the eradication of its mosquito vectors with [[insecticide|organochlorine and other insecticides]], and the development of a [[malaria vaccine]].
