Discussions and threats of secession often surfaced in [[Politics of the United States|American politics]] during the first half of the 19th century, and secession was declared by the [[Confederate States of America]] in the [[Southern United States|South]] during the [[American Civil War]]. However, in 1869, the [[Supreme Court of the United States|United States Supreme Court]] ruled in ''[[Texas v. White]]'' that unilateral secession was not permitted, saying that the union between a state ([[Texas]] in the case before the bar) and the other states "was as complete, as perpetual, and as indissoluble as the union between the original States. There was no place for reconsideration or revocation, except through revolution or through consent of the States."<ref name="Texas v. White"/><ref name="books.google.com"/> Current secession movements still exist, the most notable example of which is the Hawaiian sovereignty movement which formed after the illegal annexation of the [[Kingdom of Hawaii]] by the United States under the [[Newlands Resolution]] passed by Congress in 1898.
