In addition to the [[administrative centre]] of Guovdageaidnu (Kautokeino), the municipality has 15 smaller villages:

The current church has 150 seats and was built of wood in 1965. The first chapel was built in the 17th century. The second by [[Thomas von Westen]] in 1721. This church was burnt during [[World War II]] in 1944. The village was the site of a [[Alta controversy|major political controversy]] in the late 1970s and early 80s, when it was proposed to flood village to build a large [[Hydroelectricity|hydroelectric]] [[dam]].
