The [[China–Solomon Islands relations|Solomon Islands-China security pact]] caused alarm in late 2022, as China could build military bases across the South Pacific. In April 2024, Biden signed the [[Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act]], which would ban [[social networking service]]s if they are determined by the president and relevant provisions to be a "foreign adversary controlled application". The act explicitly applies to [[ByteDance|ByteDance Ltd.]] and its subsidiaries, which are based in China. It ceases to be applicable if the application is [[divestment|divested]] and no longer considered to be controlled by a [[United States foreign adversaries#Other meanings|foreign adversary of the United States]].
