The activists damaged an area around the hummingbird by walking near the glyph without regulation footwear. Access to the area around the lines is strictly prohibited and<ref name="WSJ Nazca"/><ref name="nyt nazca">{{cite news|last1=Neuman|first1=William|title=Peru is Indignant After Greenpeace Makes Its Mark on Ancient Site|url=https://www.nytimes.com/2014/12/13/world/americas/peru-is-indignant-after-greenpeace-makes-its-mark-on-ancient-site.html|access-date=13 December 2014|newspaper=The New York Times|date=12 December 2014|archive-date=13 December 2014|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20141213052018/http://www.nytimes.com/2014/12/13/world/americas/peru-is-indignant-after-greenpeace-makes-its-mark-on-ancient-site.html|url-status=live}}</ref> special shoes must be worn to avoid damaging the [[UN World Heritage]] site.
