There was mandatory military conscription for all white men in South Africa from 1968 until the end of [[apartheid]] in 1994.<ref name="saho">[https://www.sahistory.org.za/dated-event/military-service-becomes-compulsory-white-south-african-men Military service becomes compulsory for White South African men], South African History Online</ref> Under South African defense law, young white men had to undergo two years' continuous military training after they leave school, after which they had to serve 720 days in occasional military duty over the next 12 years.<ref name="nytsa" /> The [[End Conscription Campaign]] began in 1983 in opposition to the requirement.
