===Citadel of Cairo=== {{Main|Cairo Citadel}} [[File:Flickr - HuTect ShOts - Citadel of Salah El.Din and Masjid Muhammad Ali ููุนุฉ ุตูุงุญ ุงูุฏูู ุงูุฃููุจู ูู ุณุฌุฏ ู ุญู ุฏ ุนูู - Cairo - Egypt - 17 04 2010 (4).jpg|thumb|The Citadel of Cairo, with the [[Mosque of Muhammad Ali]]|alt=]] The Citadel is a fortified enclosure begun by [[Saladin|Salah al-Din]] in 1176 AD on an outcrop of the [[Muqatam|Muqattam Hills]] as part of a large defensive system to protect both Cairo to the north and [[Fustat]] to the southwest.{{sfn|Raymond|1993|pp=90โ97}} It was the centre of Egyptian government and residence of its rulers until 1874, when [[Isma'il Pasha|Khedive Isma'il]] moved to [[Abdeen Palace|'Abdin Palace]].{{sfn|Williams|2008|p=221}} It is still occupied by the military today, but is now open as a tourist attraction comprising, notably, the [[Egyptian National Military Museum|National Military Museum]], the 14th century [[Al-Nasir Muhammad Mosque|Mosque of al-Nasir Muhammad]], and the 19th century [[Mosque of Muhammad Ali]] which commands a dominant position on Cairo's skyline.{{sfn|Williams|2018|p=|pp=259-272}}
