Tunis is served by [[Tunis-Carthage International Airport]], located {{convert|8|km|mi|sp=us}} northeast of downtown, which began operating in 1940 under the name of Tunis El Aouina.

After independence, in the 1960s, the National Board of Seaports, which supports all ports in the country, modernized the infrastructure of the port of Tunis.<ref>{{harvp|Sebag|1998|p=659}}</ref>  In the 21st Century, the port of Tunis underwent further transformation with a marina as part of the redevelopment district of [[La Petite Sicile]].
Tunis is the starting point from which the main roads and all highways that serve different parts of the country of Tunis originate. This city has a high density of traffic because vehicle ownership is rising at 7.5% per year.<ref name="WMN">{{in lang|fr}} [http://www.webmanagercenter.com/management/imprim.php?id=9639&pg= « Le grand Tunis en chantier »] {{Webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20131206113038/http://www.webmanagercenter.com/management/imprim.php?id=9639&pg= |date=2013-12-06 }}, ''Webmanagercenter'', 1</ref>  The capital is home to approximately 40% of the cars in Tunisia, with 700,000 cars on average used in the city per day.<ref name="WMN"/>  In this context, major road infrastructure (bridges, interchanges, roads, etc..) was initiated in the late 1990s to decongest the main areas of the capital.<ref>{{in lang|fr}} [http://www.lapresse.tn/index.php?opt=15&categ=1&news=35554 Chokri Ben Nessir, « Une véritable requalification routière »], ''La Presse de Tunisie''.</ref>  The main roads to other Tunisian cities include: [[Autoroute tunisienne A1|Autoroute A1]], Tunis-[[Sfax]]; [[Autoroute tunisienne A3|Autoroute A3]], Tunis-[[Oued Zarga]]; and [[Autoroute tunisienne A4|Autoroute A4]], Tunis-[[Bizerte]]. Also, as part of the major infrastructure project, the city's traffic lights were increased from 5,000 to 7,500.
