The Nelson urban area is served by {{NZlSH|6}}, which runs in a north to southwest direction. The highway travels through the city and nearby town of [[Richmond, New Zealand|Richmond]], continuing southwest across the plains of the [[Wairoa River (Tasman)|Wairoa]] and [[Motueka River]]s. Plans to construct a motorway linking North Nelson to [[Brightwater]] in the south have so far been unsuccessful.
