Six surviving [[coal-tax post]]s are positioned at intervals along the northern boundaries of Ashtead. These posts marked the limits of the tax jurisdiction of the Corporation of London and were erected under the provisions of the London Coal and Wine Duties Continuance Act 1861.<ref name=Crossland_1991>{{cite journal |last1= Crossland |first1= E.A |year= 1991 |title= City posts |url= https://leatherheadhistoryarchive.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/VOL_5_NO_4_1991.pdf |journal= Proceedings of the Leatherhead & District Local History Society |volume= 5 |issue= 4 |pages= 121–124 |access-date= 24 May 2021 }}</ref> The majority of the posts are classified as 'Type 2' and are made of [[cast iron]], painted white.
