Himmelsbach famously termed Cooper a "rotten sleazy crook",{{sfn|Himmelsbach|Worcester|1986|p=116}} but his bold and unusual crime inspired a cult following that was expressed in song, movies, and literature. Novelty shops sold t-shirts emblazoned with "D. B. Cooper, Where Are You?"<ref name=Everett1972/> Restaurants and bowling alleys in the Pacific Northwest hold regular Cooper-themed promotions and sell tourist souvenirs.
