Wilson's mental condition improved in later years, although his auditory hallucinations persisted, especially when performing onstage.<ref name="AstonishingGenius2011"/> He credits his relationship with his second wife for allowing him to resume his career as a musician. In his own words, he said that he should have spent the early 2000s "in a mental institution under heavy sedation" due to the stresses of his condition; however, "Things have started to get a little bit easier, but I'm not always in a positive, happy place."<ref name="freedom2007"/> In 2002, he lamented that his successful treatment had [[Creativity and mental illness|inhibited his creativity and songwriting]].<ref name="A Boy's own story" />
