De La Hoya began dating actress and [[Miss USA]] 1995 titleholder [[Shanna Moakler]] in October 1997. On December 12, 2002, the Consulate General of Mexico in Los Angeles granted De La Hoya Mexican citizenship. De La Hoya stated: "I've always felt that my blood is Mexican."<ref name="De La Hoya becomes Mexican citizen" />

On September 3, 2021, De La Hoya disclosed that he was raped by a woman when he was 13.
