His friend, former President [[Herbert Hoover]], sent him a telegram the next day:{{blockquote|My dear Friend: From experience I can assure you the Waldorf Towers are much more desirable than any hospital, so I send warm good wishes that you'll soon be back in our neighborhood.{{sfn|MacArthur|1964|pp=372β373}}}} MacArthur died in the hospital after surgery on 5 April 1964, of [[primary biliary cholangitis]] aged 84.{{sfn|Perret|1996|p=585}} Kennedy had authorized a [[state funeral]] before [[Assassination of John F. Kennedy|his own death]] in 1963, and Johnson confirmed the directive, ordering that MacArthur be buried "with all the honor a grateful nation can bestow on a departed hero".{{sfn|Mossman|Stark|1991|p=216}} On 7 April his body was taken to New York City, where it lay in an open casket at the [[Park Avenue Armory]] for about 12 hours.<ref>{{cite news|last=Johnston|first=Richard H.
