===Twenty-first century=== In [[2001 World Games|2001]], the Games were held in [[Akita (city)|Akita]], [[Japan]] – the first time it had been held outside of North America or Europe. Several competitions were delayed or moved to an alternative venue when a typhoon hit the city.
