The position of County Executive was established by a modification of the county's Charter in 2006. In June 2024, the Wicomico County Council voted to approve a referendum for the [[2024 Maryland elections|2024 elections]] on whether to restore Wicomico County to a [[council–manager government]], thereby abolishing the county executive position.
