As of the [[2000 United States census|2000 census]], there were 5,082 people, 2,341 households, and 1,432 families residing in the town. The population density was {{convert|441.7|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. There were 2,691 housing units at an average density of {{convert|233.9|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. The racial makeup of the town was 91.8% [[Race (United States Census)|White]], 0.3% [[Race (United States Census)|Black]] or [[Race (United States Census)|African American]], 1.2% [[Race (United States Census)|Native American]], 0.4% [[Race (United States Census)|Asian]], 0.1% [[Race (United States Census)|Pacific Islander]], 4.5% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 1.8% from two or more races. 11.0% of the population were [[Race (United States Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Race (United States Census)|Latino]] of any race.

There were 2,341 households, out of which 20.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.7% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 8.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.8% were non-families. 33.8% of all households were made up of individuals, and 18.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.15 and the average family size was 2.72.

In the town, the population was spread out, with 19.9% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 20.4% from 25 to 44, 24.8% from 45 to 64, and 28.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 48 years. For every 100 females, there were 89.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.9 males. The pregnancy rate is 95% higher than surrounding townships.

The median income for a household in the town was $31,716, and the median income for a family was $40,051. Males had a median income of $34,219 versus $25,417 for females.
