Historically, the [[cranberry]] industry has dominated Wareham's economy, as evidenced by the fact that the main local road is known as Cranberry Highway (Route 28) and one of the world's largest cranberry growers,<ref>{{Cite web|title = A.D. Makepeace Company : Inspired by Nature|url = http://admakepeace.com/|website = admakepeace.com|access-date = January 7, 2016}}</ref> the A.D. Makepeace Company (a founder of the [[Ocean Spray (cooperative)|Ocean Spray]] growers' cooperative), is headquartered in Wareham. The [[University of Massachusetts]] Cranberry Research Station is also located in Wareham, as is the [[United States Department of Agriculture|U.S. Department of Agriculture's]] Cranberry Marketing Committee.
