===2000 census===
At the [[2000 United States census|2000 census]]<ref name="GR2" /> there were 9,064 people, 3,733 households, and 2,456 families in the CDP. The population density was {{convert|881.5|/km2|/mi2|disp=preunit|people|people|abbr=on}}. There were 5,694 housing units at an average density of {{convert|553.8|/km2|/mi2|disp=preunit|units|units|abbr=on}}. The [[Race and ethnicity in the United States Census#2010 census|racial makeup]] of the CDP was 96.35% White, 1.19% African American, 0.28% Native American, 0.35% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.86% from other races, and 0.94% from two or more races. Of the 3,733 households 28.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.9% were married couples living together, 13.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.2% were non-families. 29.5% of households were one person and 15.5% were one person aged 65 or older. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 2.98.<ref name=Census2000/>

The age distribution was 25.6% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 26.5% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 19.1% 65 or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.4 males.<ref name=Census2000/>

The median household income was $33,563 and the median family income was $38,950. Males had a median income of $32,996 versus $21,723 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $16,696. About 8.3% of families and 10.4% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 14.3% of those under age 18 and 5.8% of those age 65 or over.<ref name=Census2000/>
