Planning commenced on a new bridge in 1953, however in 1957 an inspection revealed that there had been no deterioration since 1949, and with careful maintenance, its life would be indefinite.<ref>{{Cite news|date=1953-07-06|title=Monster structure will replace Victoria Bridge|pages=5|work=Brisbane Telegraph (Qld. : 1948 - 1954)|url=http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article217198698|access-date=2021-02-16|archive-date=3 March 2021|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210303235657/https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/217198698|url-status=live}}</ref> A new bridge, which was opened on 14 April 1969,<ref name="b150s"/> was needed to meet growing traffic demands.<ref name="thenandnow"/> It cost [[Australian dollar|A$]]3.2 million and featured a modern design which has been described as sleek and elegant.<ref name="lhbris"/> For a short period both bridges were open, each operating in one direction only.<ref name="lhbris"/>
