According to the [[United States Census Bureau]], the town has a total area of {{convert|47.81|sqmi|sqkm|2}}, of which {{convert|44.27|sqmi|sqkm|2}}  is land and {{convert|3.54|sqmi|sqkm|2}} is water.<ref name ="Gazetteer files">{{cite web|title=US Gazetteer files 2010|url=https://www.census.gov/geo/maps-data/data/gazetteer2010.html|publisher=[[United States Census Bureau]]|access-date=2012-12-16}}</ref> Drained by Seven Mile Brook, Vassalboro is bounded on the west by the [[Kennebec River]]. [[China Lake (Maine)|China Lake]] is also partially located in the town.

The town is served by [[U.S. Route 201]] and [[U.S. Route 202 in Maine|U.S. Route 202]], in addition to state routes [[Maine State Route 3|3]], [[Maine State Route 9|9]], [[Maine State Route 32|32]] and [[Maine State Route 100|100]]. It borders the towns of [[China, Maine|China]] to the east, [[Augusta, Maine|Augusta]] to the south, [[Winslow, Maine|Winslow]] to the north, and across the Kennebec River, [[Sidney, Maine|Sidney]] to the west.
