The city has long had a large middle-class Jewish presence. Jewish cemeteries and religious centers dot the city, such as Young Israel of St. Louis and Agudas Israel of St. Louis, serving University City residents and those of nearby [[Clayton, Missouri|Clayton]], which also has a high concentration of Jewish residents.

The population density was {{convert|5,963.4|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. There were 17,208 housing units at an average density of {{convert|2,926.5|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. The racial makeup was 48.89% (17,145) [[White (U.S. Census)|white]], 36.63% (12,843) [[African American (U.S. Census)|black or African-American]], 0.18% (64) [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]] or [[Alaska Native]], 6.48% (2,273) [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.05% (18) [[Pacific Islander (U.S. Census)|Pacific Islander]], 1.98% (695) from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 5.78% (2,027) from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race was 2.1% (731) of the population.

The racial makeup of the city was 50.8% [[White Americans|White]], 41.1% [[African Americans|African American]], 0.3% [[Native Americans in the United States|Native American]], 4.3% [[Asian Americans|Asian]], 0.9% from [[Race (U.S. Census)|other races]], and 2.7% from two or more races. [[Hispanic and Latino Americans|Hispanic or Latino]] of any race were 2.8% of the population.

The population density was {{convert|6,363.1|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. There were 17,485 housing units at an average density of {{convert|2,972.6|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. The racial makeup of the city was 49.26% [[White Americans|White]], 45.35% [[African Americans|African American]], 0.16% [[Native Americans in the United States|Native American]], 2.85% [[Asian Americans|Asian]], 0.03% [[Pacific Islander Americans|Pacific Islander]], 0.56% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 1.80% from two or more races. [[Hispanic and Latino Americans|Hispanic or Latino]] of any race were 1.56% of the population. The city is considered (by inhabitants) to be divided roughly into three zones from north to south. North of Olive is predominantly Black, from Olive to Delmar is mixed, and south of Delmar is predominantly White. Because of the city's racial composition, it has not been part of the [[desegregation|integration]] busing program between the [[St. Louis|City of St. Louis]] and St. Louis County.

In the city, the population was spread out, with 21.8% under the age of 18, 11.3% from 18 to 24, 31.1% from 25 to 44, 22.4% from 45 to 64, and 13.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females, there were 84.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 80.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $75,902, and the median income for a family was $90,539. Males had a median income of $55,588 versus $45,440 for females. The [[per capita income]] for the city was $26,901. About 9.5% of families and 14.7% of the population were below the [[poverty line]], including 19.1% of those under age 18 and 12.1% of those age 65 or over.
