As of the 2010 [[census]],<ref name="GR2"/> there were 18,655 people, 7,717 households, and 5,161 families residing in the city. The racial makeup of the city was 88.1% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 7.0% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.2% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 1.2% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 1.1% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 2.5% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 3.1% of the population.

As of the 2000 [[census]],<ref name="GR2"/> there were 17,994 people, 7,336 households, and 5,039 families residing in the city. The population density was {{convert|809.6|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. There were 7,890 housing units at an average density of {{convert|355.0|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. The racial makeup of the city was 89.69% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 6.76% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.28% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 1.01% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.05% [[Pacific Islander (U.S. Census)|Pacific Islander]], 0.64% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 1.57% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 1.71% of the population.

There were 7,336 households, out of which 32.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.9% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 13.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.3% were non-families. Of all households 27.3% were made up of individuals, and 11.8% had someone living alone who was 65&nbsp;years of age or older. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 2.94.

In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.4% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 26.9% from 25 to 44, 23.0% from 45 to 64, and 16.1% who were 65&nbsp;years of age or older. The median age was 38&nbsp;years. For every 100 females, there were 90.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.6 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $34,119, and the median income for a family was $39,797. Males had a median income of $33,662 versus $20,962 for females.
