== Influence on ''2001: A Space Odyssey'' ==
The story's plot and ideas were a significant influence on the development of the 1968 film ''[[2001: A Space Odyssey (film)|2001: A Space Odyssey]]'' by [[Stanley Kubrick]] and on the novel. Clarke and Kubrick adapted the short story and fused it with many other concepts. Clarke later expressed impatience with "The Sentinel" being described as the basis for the film:
