Having retired as a player, Eriksson received an offer to become Tord Grip's assistant at [[Degerfors IF]].<ref name=invertingpyramid/><ref>{{cite book|last=Lovejoy|first=Joe|title=Sven: The Final Reckoning |year=2004|publisher=HarperCollins |isbn=0-00-714069-X}}p78</ref> A year later, Grip was appointed assistant manager of the [[Sweden men's national football team|Sweden national team]], and Eriksson became Degerfors' manager. His stint as manager lasted from 1 January 1977 to 31 December 1978.<ref name=degerforsjob>{{cite web|title=Degerfors IF .:.
