Although he entered politics at a relatively late age, his rise to the top leadership was very rapid. In the Treasury he served jointly with [[Hardman Lever]], who had been appointed in 1916, but after 1919 Baldwin carried out the duties largely alone. He was appointed to the [[Privy Council of the United Kingdom|Privy Council]] in the [[1920 Birthday Honours]].
