According to the [[United States Census Bureau]], the town has a total area of {{convert|20.8|sqmi|km2}}, of which {{convert|19.9|sqmi|km2}}  is land and {{convert|0.8|sqmi|km2}}  (3.90%) is water.

Rosendale is bisected or bordered by natural and man-made formations.  The [[New York State Thruway]] ([[Interstate 87 (New York)|Interstate 87]]) passes through the town, and the [[Rondout Creek]] joins the [[Wallkill River]] by the eastern town line.
