The [[Recife metropolitan area]] is the 5th most populous of Brazil, after [[São Paulo]], [[Rio de Janeiro]], [[Belo Horizonte]] and [[Porto Alegre]], and the first in the [[Northeast Region, Brazil|Northeast region]].
