Death toll estimations vary from 2,000 - 2,800 civilians; some speak about 5,000 or even 10,000 people killed. These killings are known as ''Gzerot Tatnó'' (Hebrew: גזרות תתנ"ו, Edicts of 4856).<ref>Salomo ben Simson, Bericht über die Verfolgung der jüdischen Gemeinden im deutschen Reich während des Ersten Kreuzzugs 1096, http://www.geschichtsquellen.de/werk/4282</ref> Another group had been led by the knight count [[Emicho|Emicho of Leiningen]] who provoked the group to the massacres.<ref name=":0" />
