===Oral cancer and periodontal disease===

Current literature suggests a link between periodontal disease and oral cancer. Studies have confirmed an increase in systemic inflammation markers such as [[C-reactive protein|C-Reactive Protein]] and [[Interleukin 6|Interleukin-6]] to be found in patients with advanced periodontal disease. The link between systemic inflammation and oral cancer has also been well established.

Both periodontal disease and cancer risk are associated with genetic susceptibility and it is possible that there is a positive association by a shared genetic susceptibility in the two diseases.
