On the return of [[Richard I of England| Richard the Lionheart]] from the [[Third Crusade|Crusades]] in 1194, the castle was occupied by supporters of [[John, King of England|Prince John]], including the [[Sheriff of Nottingham (position)|Sheriff of Nottingham]].
