Fauna is sparse on the island because of a lack of vegetation and the consequences of phosphate mining. There are no native land [[mammal]]s, but there are native [[insect]]s, [[Terrestrial crab|land crabs]], and [[bird]]s, including the endemic [[Nauru reed warbler]].
