As a ruler, Moctezuma faced and overcame many natural disasters. These droughts and frosts continued for four years.<ref name=":1"/> The famines resulted in some selling their children<ref name=":0"/> or themselves<ref name=":1"/> into slavery, and the city lost most of its population.
