On September 5, 2004, the county was affected by the category 2 landfall of [[Hurricane Frances]]. Only 21 days later, on September 26, 2004, [[Hurricane Jeanne]] made landfall near Indian River County as a category 3 hurricane with 120 mph winds. A special Tornado Warning was issued (precursor to the [[Extreme wind warning|Extreme Wind Warning]]) for Indian River County due to the right eye wall of the storm striking hitting the county.
