Tipping may not be expected when a fee is explicitly charged for the service.<ref name="usatoday.com" /> A [[service charge]] is sometimes added to bills in restaurants and similar establishments. In the United States, criminal charges were dropped in two separate cases over non-payment of mandatory gratuities.
