==Occurrence==
Granitic rock is widely distributed throughout the [[continental crust]].<ref>{{Cite book |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=iL8762HeViEC&q=granitic+rock+found+much+of+continental+crust&pg=PA27 |title=Earth Science Today |last=Singh |first=G. |date=2009 |publisher=Discovery Publishing House |isbn=9788183564380 |language=en}}</ref> Much of it was intruded during the [[Precambrian]] age; it is the most abundant [[basement rock]] that underlies the relatively thin [[sedimentary rock|sedimentary]] veneer of the continents. [[Outcrop]]s of granite tend to form [[tor (rock formation)|tors]], [[Granite dome|domes]] or [[bornhardt]]s, and rounded [[massif]]s. Granites sometimes occur in circular [[depression (geology)|depression]]s surrounded by a range of hills, formed by the [[metamorphic aureole]] or [[hornfels]]. Granite often occurs as relatively small, less than 100&nbsp;km<sup>2</sup> stock masses ([[stock (geology)|stocks]]) and in [[batholith]]s that are often associated with [[orogeny|orogenic]] [[mountain]] ranges. Small [[dike (geology)|dikes]] of granitic composition called [[aplite]]s are often associated with the margins of granitic [[intrusion (geology)|intrusion]]s.
