===Election and oath of office===

<blockquote>I (Governor) do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the [[Constitution of the United States]] and the Constitution of the State of California against all enemies foreign and domestic, that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the State of California, that I take this obligation freely without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties upon which I am about to enter.</blockquote>Governors take office on the first Monday after January 1 after their election.
