===Climate=== Like most of Ireland, Galway has an oceanic climate (Cfb) according to the Köppen climate classification, being one of the world's mildest cities for latitude, partly because it is on an island. Galway has a year-round mild, moist, temperate and changeable climate, due to the prevailing winds of the North Atlantic Current together with the Gulf Stream, whilst on the other side of the Atlantic temperatures can be 20 °C cooler or more. The city does not experience temperature extremes, with temperatures below and above being rare. The city receives an average of 1156 mm of precipitation annually, which is evenly distributed throughout the year. The average January temperature in the city is and the average July temperature is . The highest temperature ever recorded in Galway was 31.7 C in July 1921, whilst the lowest temperature recorded was in January 1945. While extreme weather is rare, the city and county can experience severe windstorms that are the result of vigorous Atlantic depressions that occasionally pass along the north west coast of Ireland. Most of these storms occur between late autumn and early spring. Due to the city's northerly location, Galway has long summer days. Sunrise on summer solstice occurs at 05:07 WEST and sunset at 22:07. By contrast, on winter solstice, the sun rises at 08:49 WET, and sets at 16:19. {{Weather box|location = Galway, elevation: 8 m, 1981–2010 normals, extremes 1861–2002 | collapsed = | metric first = y | single line = y | Jan record high C = 14.4 | Feb record high C = 15.7 | Mar record high C = 21.1 | Apr record high C = 23.3 | May record high C = 26.7 | Jun record high C = 30.6 | Jul record high C = 31.7 | Aug record high C = 30.6 | Sep record high C = 28.3 | Oct record high C = 25.6 | Nov record high C = 18.3 | Dec record high C = 16.7 | year record high C = 31.7 | Jan high C = 8.7 | Feb high C = 9.1 | Mar high C = 10.8 | Apr high C = 13.0 | May high C = 15.8 | Jun high C = 17.8 | Jul high C = 19.5 | Aug high C = 19.1 | Sep high C = 17.3 | Oct high C = 14.1 | Nov high C = 11.0 | Dec high C = 9.0 | year high C = 13.8 | Jan mean C = 6.0 | Feb mean C = 6.2 | Mar mean C = 7.8 | Apr mean C = 9.3 | May mean C = 11.9 | Jun mean C = 14.2 | Jul mean C = 16.1 | Aug mean C = 15.8 | Sep mean C = 13.9 | Oct mean C = 11.0 | Nov mean C = 8.1 | Dec mean C = 6.3 | year mean C = 10.6 | Jan low C = 3.5 | Feb low C = 3.8 | Mar low C = 4.9 | Apr low C = 5.8 | May low C = 8.0 | Jun low C = 10.6 | Jul low C = 12.9 | Aug low C = 12.5 | Sep low C = 10.4 | Oct low C = 7.9 | Nov low C = 5.1 | Dec low C = 3.6 | year low C = 7.3 | Jan record low C = -11.7 | Feb record low C = -10.5 | Mar record low C = -6.7 | Apr record low C = -6.7 | May record low C = -1.5 | Jun record low C = -2.2 | Jul record low C = 3.3 | Aug record low C = 1.7 | Sep record low C = 0.6 | Oct record low C = -5.0 | Nov record low C = -6.7 | Dec record low C = -8.9 | year record low C = -11.7 | precipitation colour = green | Jan precipitation mm = 114.1 | Feb precipitation mm = 94.4 | Mar precipitation mm = 92.0 | Apr precipitation mm = 60.5 | May precipitation mm = 68.5 | Jun precipitation mm = 80.6 | Jul precipitation mm = 69.3 | Aug precipitation mm = 108.9 | Sep precipitation mm = 93.2 | Oct precipitation mm = 130.2 | Nov precipitation mm = 123.8 | Dec precipitation mm = 120.9 | year precipitation mm = 1156.2 | unit precipitation days = 1.0 mm | Jan precipitation days = 15 | Feb precipitation days = 14 | Mar precipitation days = 16 | Apr precipitation days = 12 | May precipitation days = 12 | Jun precipitation days = 12 | Jul precipitation days = 12 | Aug precipitation days = 15 | Sep precipitation days = 13 | Oct precipitation days = 17 | Nov precipitation days = 17 | Dec precipitation days = 17 | year precipitation days = 170 | Jan sun = 45.2 | Feb sun = 60.9 | Mar sun = 95.1 | Apr sun = 137.6 | May sun = 171.4 | Jun sun = 147.0 | Jul sun = 132.2 | Aug sun = 128.5 | Sep sun = 99.8 | Oct sun = 79.6 | Nov sun = 54.8 | Dec sun = 40.1 | year sun = 1192.2 | source 1 = KNMI | source 2 = Weather2Travel (sunshine hours) }}
