====Ottoman conquest====
Within a month after the devastating 1354 earthquake the [[Ottoman Empire|Ottomans]] [[Fall of Gallipoli|besieged and captured]] the town of Gallipoli, making it the first Ottoman stronghold in Europe and the staging area for Ottoman expansion across the [[Balkans]].<ref>Crowley, Roger. 1453: ''The Holy War for Constantinople and the Clash of Islam and the West''. The [[Greeks]] living there were allowed to continue their everyday activities.
