When, between 57 and 50 BCE, [[Julius Caesar]] conquered [[Gaul]], the population of Flémalle and its surroundings became Roman. This [[Gallic Wars|conquest of Gaul]] allowed Belgium to adopt the knowledge, customs, and traditions of the [[Ancient Rome|Romans]].

==== Roman Diploma ====
The Flémalle Roman diploma<ref group="B">{{cite book|language=French|author1=H. Schuermans|chapter=Roman Military Diploma of Flémalle|volume=18|title=Bull. Inst. arch. liégeois|pages=63–75|date=1885}}</ref> is an archaeological document of great importance. It dates from the reign of [[Trajan]], from the year [[AD 98|98]]. It was recovered from the Meuse River in 1880.<ref>{{cite web |title=Fragment of a military diploma (Year 98 AD) |url=http://www.ialg.be/collections/archeologie/perioderomaine/I_6387.html |website=ialg.be |access-date=2021-05-08}}.</ref> This diploma, belonging to a [[Roman army|soldier]] from [[Tongeren]] (though this is disputed<ref group="B">{{cite book|language=French|author1=Raepsaet-Charlier Marie-Thérèse|chapter=The settlement of Roman auxiliary veterans according to military diplomas|volume=47|title=Classical Antiquity|pages=557–565|date=1978}}</ref>), tells us that the holder of such a document, a Roman soldier, could obtain leave to return to his village.
