Emporia is the principal city of the Emporia [[Emporia micropolitan area|Micropolitan Statistical Area]], which includes all of Lyon and [[Chase County, Kansas|Chase]] counties.

22.1% of the population was under the age of 18, 17.8% from 18 to 24, 24.8% from 25 to 44, 20.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32.3 years. The racial makeup of the city was 84% [[White American|White]], 3.2% [[African American]], 3.1% [[Asian American|Asian]], 0.8% [[Native Americans in the United States|American Indian]], 10.5% from some other race, and 3.1% from two or more races. 14.4% of the population was [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race.<ref name=Census2010/>

There were 9,812 households, of which 31.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.0% were married couples living together, 5.3% had a male householder with no wife present, 11.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 43.2% were non-families. 32.1% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.39, and the average family size was 3.08.<ref name=Census2010/>

In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.5% under the age of 18, 19.7% from 18 to 24, 24.5% from 25 to 44, 20.9% from 45 to 64, and 11.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 29.0 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.8 males age 18 and over.<ref name=Census2010/>

The median income for a household in the city was $34,443, and the median income for a family was $47,500. Males had a median income of $32,873 versus $25,821 for females.
