He was awarded the [[Spingarn Medal]] by the [[NAACP]] in 1944 for his work on the British and American projects. He was given an honorary doctor of science degree, first by [[Virginia State College]] in 1945 then by Amherst in 1947.<ref name="cdrewedu"/>
