At the [[2000 United States Census|2000 census]] there were 962 people, 411 households, and 256 families living in the town. The population density was {{convert|724.9|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. There were 444 housing units at an average density of {{convert|334.6|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}. The [[Race and ethnicity in the United States Census#2000 census|racial makeup]] of the town was 85.86% White, 10.60% African American, 0.83% Native American, 0.21% Asian, 0.52% from other races, and 1.98% from two or more races. Of the 411 households in 2000, 33.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 37.0% were married couples living together, 20.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.5% were non-families. 32.6% of households were one person and 16.3% were one person aged 65 or older. The average household size was 2.34 and the average family size was 2.95.

In 2000, the age distribution was 28.4% under the age of 18, 12.4% from 18 to 24, 25.5% from 25 to 44, 20.9% from 45 to 64, and 12.9% 65 or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 78.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 74.9 males.

In 2000, the median household income was $25,234 and the median family income  was $32,167. Males had a median income of $27,422 versus $23,036 for females. The per capita income for the town was $14,710.
