The ''[[Metamorphoses (poem)|Metamorphoses]]'' of [[Ovid]] says that the plant was created by the goddess [[Aphrodite]] when she sprinkled nectar on the blood of her dead lover [[Adonis]], suggesting the frailty of the petals that can be easily blown away by the wind.
