* [[July 1]] &ndash; [[Willem Schouten]] and the crew of the Dutch ship ''Eendracht'' return to the Netherlands after [[circumnavigation world record progression|sailing around the world]] in two years and 17 days, in what is only the fourth circumnavigation of the globe, and the first since 1588.
